About Simonstown Gaels GFC

In 1965 Muhammad Ali was Heavyweight Champion of the World, Lyndon Johnson was in the White House, Sean Lemass was Taoiseach, Martin Quinn was Meath’s full-back, Mick O’Connell was the star man for Kerry, Colm O’Rourke was in high infants over in Leitrim, and Arkle won his second Gold Cup.

Just outside of Navan, meanwhile, a group of lads, led by Joe Clarke of Simonstown and Jimmy Lane of St. Mary’s Park, were making a big decision to start a new football club. They had to get a few locals back from Kilberry and Gibbstown, there were a few ex-O’Mahony’s available, and there were a few other young lads unattached and ‘mad’ for action.

Senior men Div 1 league v St Peter’s Dunboyne

Simonstown 2—10   (0—6)  Dunboyne 2—13 (0—8)          The 2024 Senior League  Div I  match in Simonstown on Sunday morning resulted in a narrow win for the visitors Dunboyne.  Luke Caffrey got the hosts a good start  with a point from play  in the first minute. Dunboyne  then took over and recorded 7 points (1f) while Ben Hoey converted a free for Simonstown to leave Dunboyne leading 0—7 to  0—2 after twenty minutes.  The home side had a period of dominance which yielded two Ben Hoey points (1f) and one each from Mark Devlin and Aaron Farrelly.  Dunboyne added two points and went into the dressing at half time  leading  0—8 to 0—6.         Second half started with another Hoey free following a foul on Caffrey.  From the resultant  kick out Luke Caffrey did a wonderful job dispossessing the back and setting  up Aaron Farrelly who finished to the net to put Simons in front  1—7 to 0—8 after 3 minutes.  Ciaran Lenihan then drew the teams level as he converted a free and a forty five  1—7 to 0—10. Aaron Farrelly then  split the posts  with a fine effort which put Simons in front  1—8 to 0—10.   Dunboyne  upped the ante and scored a goal to give them a 1—10 to 1—8 lead.  Luke Caffrey then pointed from distance for  the Navan men. A Dunboyne attack resulted in them being awarded  a penalty ( a very harsh decision) which was duly put away. They added a point from play immediately afterwards to lead by seven points  2—13 to 1—9 with twenty two second half minutes on the clock.  Shane Barry with a glorious kicked pass of 30 yds or more found Josh Carolan who sneaked in behind the defense and calmy finished to the net.  Brian Mc Grath posted a point  to leave scoreboard reading Dunboyne 2—13 Simons 2—10. The hosts launched a wave of attacks but the Dunboyne defence stood firm and held on to collect their first league points.          After the match Dunboyne players Cathal Finn, Shane McEntee and Donal Lenihan on behalf of their team made a presentation to Niall Kane for his treatment fund.  Thanks vey much Dunboyne **Simonstown;** Robbie Burlingham, ...Mark Devlin (0—1), Stephen Moran, Aaron Chinchilla,...Brian McGrath(0—1), Josh Carolan(1—0), David McKeever,...Briain Conlon,  Sean Tobin...Jimmy Heaney, Ben Hoey (0—4)3f, Shane McEnery,....Luke Caffrey(0—2), Tadgh Hanrahan, Aaron Farrelly(1—2).... \*\*\*Subs\*\*\*    Shane Barry/ T. Senior men Div 5 .. Simonstown v navan O’Mahonys

Simonstown     1—9     O Mahonys  3—10        O Mahonys  were briskly out of the blocks  with a scoring blitz  in Simonstown on Friday night.   Both teams put on a good display of attacking end to end football in wet slippery conditions.  The visitors open with a goal in a first minute that saw the hosts last defender slip and the O Mahs  forward  found  the net for the  first score of the game.  By the fourth minute O Mahs were 1—2 to 0—0 in front.   Simonstwn replied with two Eoghan Gough points and one each for Shane McEnery and David McKeever.  Two furthers points by the visitors left O Mahs leading 1—4 to 0—4 after twenty minutes.  Terry Sheils made a great save but could do verylittle later on as O Mahonys after a flowing move bagged their second three pointer of the night.  Gough converted a free and Tadgh Hanrahan split the posts  from  an acute angle.  O Mahonys added another point and led at the break 2---5   to 0—6.              The visitors added four more points while Gough pointed for Simons to see scoreboard reading O Mahs 2—9 Simons 0—7 with twenty two second half minutes on the clock. Simons Luke Caffrey was at the end of some good  interlinking forward play when hauled  down in the square,  got up took the penalty himself and smashed it to the net on twenty nine minutes to leave scoreboard reading 2—9 to 1--7.   Aaron Farrelly  sent over two more points for Simons.  As Simons pressed forward an O Mahs breakaway led  to their third goal of the night with the last kick of a very entertaining contest. Final score; O Mahs 3—10 Simons 1-9.  This game saw a very welcome return to action for Rory O Connor,  Ian O Rourke and Conor Sherdian.  A warm welcome also to Brian Neary a new name on Simons team lists.  He transferred to us this spring from the  Elphin Club, Co.Roscommon.     Simonstown; Terry Sheils,...
